Great additions, Ellen — There really are a cheeringly large number of people who make the grade here! And Yvonne, thank you for that image of Alice Munro’s red toenails. Part of what’s so wonderful about her is her sensuality/sexuality combined with her intelligence defying all stupid age stereotypes.

The only time I ever saw Alice Munro in person was just a couple of years ago in New Hampshire when she was awarded the MacDowell Medal. Chronologically she was in her 70s, and on that day she wore her silver white hair in a chic bob and wore white from head to toe, including open-toe sandals. Striking. The only color she wore was on her toenails, which were painted a fire-engine red. This was noticed and commented on by my date, a photographer who got close up to the stage so he could take a picture of her feet. I immediately made a mental note-to-self: get. red. polish. for. my. toenails.
Looking sexy is not acting old.
