I mean yeah, the poetry degree probably won't make you a lot, but you used to be able to depend on the local coffeshop (or starbucks) for 9-10 bucks an hour, which is enough to live away from home. Now the starbucks is hiring down on their luck gen-xers and boomers. It's a valid criticism, but the jobs are finite in number, and the young post-grads don't have the experience to compete in many cases.
